How it started
We ran boards on email first
We started Hippoly in 2018 after years on boards that ran on email threads, shared folders and whoever’s laptop had the latest version. It worked, until it didn’t. A document stuck in someone’s inbox, a decision nobody could trace, a new member with no way to catch up.
The tools out there weren’t built for how boards actually work, and the ones that came close cost too much and asked too much of the people using them. So we built our own, around three things we’d seen. If one member never logged in, the documents went out by email anyway. So it had to be simple enough for everyone. Board members read on the way to the meeting, not at a desk. It had to work on a phone. And a board putting its most sensitive documents in the cloud wanted to see how they were protected, not take it on trust.
Those three things are still the product, and still the test we hold it to.

Team
Entrepreneurs, developers and board members
Before Hippoly, we helped build several tech companies. We also spent years on mission-critical systems in defence and pharmaceuticals, where usability and security aren’t up for negotiation. Every decision we make about Hippoly draws on that, and on our own years as developers, board members, founders and advisers.
The name
Where the name comes from
The name combines Hip, or Hippos, a slightly tongue-in-cheek Silicon Valley nickname for boards (Highly Important People), with the Greek poly, meaning many. Together they say what we want to be, a simpler working life for the people who run a business, a nonprofit or a foundation.

Developed in Sweden, hosted in the EU
Hippoly AB is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the product is available in English and Swedish. The platform runs on infrastructure in the EU, and each workspace has its own encrypted database. Our trust pages cover GDPR, our security measures and our sub-processors.
